The Montreal Neurological Institute (MNI) of McGill University is seeking to hire a Radiation Safety Officer (RSO).The RSO is responsible for the operation and maintenance of an active and complete radiation safety program at the MNI, covering all activities taking place in a research environment, including all laboratories using radioactive isotopes and the cyclotron facility, involving radioactivity/ionizing radiations. Please note that the presence of a cyclotron in our facility means we are a Class II Nuclear Facility, and therefore the MNI RSO has to satisfy all the requirements of the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission. Tasks that must be performed by the MNI RSO include, but are not limited to:
1. Define and maintain an up-to-date program which will be described in the MNI Radiation Safety Manual.2. Liaise with the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission and McGill’s Radiation Safety Office, and meet all requirements from those two organizations.
3. Ensure that all personnel handling radioactive material receives adequate training before being allowed to operate.
4. Be responsible for all orders of radioactive material entering the MNI.
5. Ensure proper disposal of all radioactive material from laboratories using such material at the MNI.
6. Administer the program covering all monitoring equipment (personal radiation dosimeters, other dosimetry and radiation detection equipment).
7. Supervise a satisfactory program of radioactive contamination monitoring in laboratories using radioactive material.
8. Maintain a record of all protocols involving human research subjects who are exposed to radiation doses and monitor that such protocols comply with accepted radiation doses limits.
9. Attend meetings of the MNI Radiation Safety Committee.
10. Ensure continuous coverage (24 hours a day, all year) in case of emergencies involving radioactive material.
The successful candidate must possess a MSc or PhD degree in physics and a minimum of 3 years experience in a radiation safety environment program.
