Before retiring in 2009 after a long
career at The Neuro, Dr. Marilyn Jones-Gotman sought to understand how the
human brain functions with respect to a variety of cognitive and sensory
abilities, with a special interest in how learning mechanisms differ as a
function of differing task requirements and stimulus types such as faces,
words, designs or odors. Her studies observed patients with temporal lobe
epilepsy before and after epilepsy surgery as well as healthy volunteers. Her
research used PET and fMRI to examine brain function during learning and
memory, during perception of different odors and tastes, and comparing
responses to pleasant vs. unpleasant sensory stimuli.
