The Neuro Team
Epilepsy
The Montreal Neurological Institute has been at the forefront of epilepsy treatment and research for over half a century. In the past decade, work carried out here has sparked interest world-wide in the surgical treatment of epilepsy.
The Epilepsy Group enjoys close research and clinical collaborations with several research groups at the MNI including Neurosurgery, Brain Imaging, Neuropsychology, and Complex Neural Systems.

Several investigators affiliated with other groups also contribute to the work of the Epilepsy Group. Dr. Massimo Avoli (Cell Biology of Excitable Tissues) uses hippocampal slices to study epileptogenesis in tissue removed in epilepsy surgery age and temperature-related factors in epilepsy, and does work related to the problem of febrile convulsions. Dr. André Olivier (Neurosurgery) has developed stereotactic and multimodal imaging techniques used in planning epilepsy surgery. Dr. Richard Leblanc (Neurosurgery) studies the role of the amygdala in the genesis of temporal lobe epilepsy and, with Dr. Ernst Meyer (Brain Imaging), has developed functional speech localization with PET.
Dr. Marilyn-Jones Gotman (Cognitive Neuroscience) is investigating the effect of lateral versus mesial temporal resection in epilepsy surgery on memory and other temporal lobe functions. She is also interested in the study of memory using the intracarotic amytal injection to inactivate one or the other hemisphere.
