Until his death in February, 2010, Dr. Ernst
Meyer and his students used PET and functional MRI to investigate the
relation between cerebral blood flow (CBF) and metabolism under normal and
pathological conditions. Being studied were patients with mitochondrial
diseases in whom oxidative metabolism is disturbed. He was also developing
better methodologies for measuring CBF and blood volume in normal subjects
and in patients who have undergone neurosurgical operations. Similar methods
were used to examine cerebral reorganization of sensory-motor areas in stroke
patients in the hope of improving rehabilitation. With neurosurgeon Dr.
Richard Leblanc, Dr. Meyer explored the application of non-invasive PET and
fMRI to pre-surgical functional mapping as an alternative to exploratory
craniotomy in patients suffering from arteriovenous malformations and
epilepsy.
