The Neuro Team
Neurosurgical Research
Research activities at the MNI were initiated in the 1930s by Drs. Wilder Penfield and William Cone. These renowned neurosurgeons were prototype clinician-scientists who pursued research in brain tumours and epilepsy with the goal of improving patient treatment. The tradition they established of using surgical interventions as opportunities to learn about the brain's functioning continues to this day. Neurosurgery, in collaboration with the McConnell Brain Imaging Centre, has embarked on a large project using frameless stereotaxy both for microsurgical craniotomies and as an alternative to standard stereotaxy.
